Client
University of North Alabama
Contractor
MJ Harris
Size
45,000 square feet

This 45,000-square-foot facility not only provides the college with a premier learning center, but serves as a backdrop to one of the most prominent locations on campus - Founder’s Hill. The facility allowed the University to double the size of its computing programs and number of graduates, in direct collaboration with industry partners, in order to meet burgeoning workforce demand in the technology sector throughout the region.

“This project is a critical component in the institution’s ongoing role as Alabama’s Workforce Development University,” said UNA President Dr. Ken Kitts.

Spaces of innovation

The Computing and Mathematics Building is split into three floors, with each serving a different purpose. The bottom floor contains a handful of classrooms and computer laboratories, a cafe and a common area with a large array of seating options for students to study, complete with televisions and white boards. The second floor is home to the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, and the third floor holds the Department of Mathematics.

Cutting edge designs

Designed with an emphasis on community, the building aims to foster connection and interaction among students. The cyber security lab and flex labs give a glimpse into the computer science program, while the commons area provides a variety of seating and working areas to enhance student interaction between disciplines. In addition, the programming includes creative classroom instructional space with innovative lighting, furniture design and layouts.
