Wetumpka Downtown Streetscape
The City of Wetumpka commissioned a “Downtown and Riverfront Development Plan” with the purpose of providing the City with a blueprint for revitalizing the downtown and riverfront areas and with the goal to improve the living and economic conditions of Wetumpka. The City chose GMC to begin implementing the plan in multiple phases.
Phase One project involved upgrading and rerouting utilities within the downtown area of Wetumpka. Phase Two of the Downtown Revitalization Plan which included a new urban roundabout, ADA sidewalk improvements, enhanced parking areas, decorative lighting, and new landscaping in the northeastern blocks of downtown Wetumpka. Phase Three is a revitalization of South Main Street, a gateway into downtown Wetumpka. The plan for South Main Street also included ADA sidewalk improvements, enhanced parking areas, decorative lighting, and a center landscaped island that not only enhances the entryway into Historic Downtown Wetumpka but also serves to calm traffic as it moves into pedestrian friendly zones. All three phases have been completed and construction ended in the winter of 2021.
GMC has worked hand-in-hand with the City of Wetumpka on each and every phase of this Downtown Revitalization project from conceptual planning, acquisition of funding, design, bidding, and construction administration. Each service involved in the project worked with the City’s interests in mind bringing close coordination between disciplines and allowing the City to work with one team of planners, engineers, and landscape architects.
