The historic Dexter Avenue located in Montgomery is part of the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail and home of the Historic Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church. Dexter Avenue ends at the steps of the Alabama State Capitol Building and is the site of numerous historical events.
The project included realignment of Dexter Avenue and adding a median that includes pedestrian stamped walkways and the realignment of Bainbridge Street in front of the Capitol from Washington Avenue to Monroe Street. All roadways were planned, patched and resurfaced, and included pedestrian crosswalks, traffic control striping and traffic signals.
GMC orchestrated a large public involvement meeting prior to construction and worked with business owners during construction to coordinate access to assure the least inconvenience. GMC worked hand-in-hand with the City, the Alabama Historic Preservation Society, State of Alabama Tourism Department and Alabama Building Renovation Finance Authority throughout the construction.
Dexter Avenue was also used in the Golden Globe Best Picture Award-winning drama, Selma. During construction, GMC was asked by the Tourism Department to assist in adapting the site temporarily to fit the 1960s era project. This included barricading of streets for filming, removal of modern type light fixtures, construction fencing, monuments, parking meters and coordination for removal of U.S. Postal drop boxes.
