Birmingham, Alabama
The 835,000-square-foot Protective Stadium was designed to accommodate a maximum of 42,000 fans for NCAA D1 football, professional soccer, outdoor concerts, shows, and many other special events.
This stadium provides the home field for the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers Football team, the Birmingham Legion FC (a USL Championship Team), the Ticket Smarter Birmingham Bowl, and is the site for the opening and closing ceremonies of The World Games in 2022.
The west side tower has an indoor club with seating for 1,000. There are two suite levels with a total of 32 suites. The top floor contains a press box for coaching, broadcast, and other media. The south end zone has a concourse club and the north end zone has a “supporter” section for soccer fans during soccer matches, and for students and the marching band during football games.
Other features include outdoor party decks, a large entry plaza on the south-end, at-grade access on the north-end of the concourse, several large multi-functional locker rooms, and enough support space to accommodate a variety of events. GMC designed the facility in collaboration with Populous.
