The Amazon Fulfillment Center in Bessemer, Alabama is Amazon's first major fulfillment center in Alabama. The 855,000-square-foot, $325 million project was Amazon's first fulfillment center in the metro Birmingham area and employs at least 1,500 – making it the largest economic development project in recent Birmingham history in terms of total jobs.

Amazon selected the 133.8-acre site in Bessemer, Ala., for its new fulfillment center in 2018. Prior to its development, Birmingham metro was the nation’s largest metro without an Amazon distribution center. Officials broke ground on the project in October 2018, which is located off Interstate 20/59 in Bessemer on a former U.S. Steel property. The facility, apart from a vast network of conveyor systems and shipping infrastructure, will also include Amazon Robotics, a technology that will help fulfill orders more efficiently. These robots will travel throughout parts of the building to pick up mobile shelves of product and deliver them to employees at work stations. This is expected to cut down on processing times, leading to faster shipping.
