Intern Highlight 2024
August 21, 2024 · Insights
Another summer has come and gone, which means GMC has said goodbye to another group of phenomenal interns. We always look forward to the energy that abounds in our offices as these up-and-coming young professionals spend a few months learning and growing alongside our team. As our 2024 summer interns are getting back into the swing of classes, we wanted to highlight some of the spectacular students who spent the summer with us across our various disciplines and locations.
Omkar Walke joined our Landscape Architecture and Planning department as a community planning intern in Birmingham. During his internship, he was able to collaborate on master plans, city planning meetings, streetscape designs and more.
“I have gotten to work on something which I have been pursuing as a student in my academics but also learn a lot of new things from the very talented and diverse team,” Omkar said. “Working on varied scale projects, doing site visits and arranging public meetings gives me a great opportunity to understand the process and be a part of a greater purpose and experiences.”
As one of the largest disciplines at GMC, our Engineering team had several interns on the team to help over the summer, working with both our site civil and water resources and treatment groups. Ryan Fick served with our water resources team in Nashville, learning how to take a design from paper into the real world.
“My favorite thing that I’ve done during my internship has been going to different wastewater treatment plants. Being able to visualize what I have been working on paper has been an incredible experience that makes the work I am actually doing feel real,” Ryan said. “Seeing the whole process from the start to finish is something truly gratifying that I am happy to have experienced.”
Alexis Arredondo Sorroza was on the other side of engineering with the site civil group in Cartersville, Georgia. He was able to use the same programs he’s using in school and hone in on his technical abilities.
“This collaborative environment has significantly accelerated my proficiency in Civil 3D, allowing me to build a more comprehensive and robust skill set,” he said. “The exposure to various approaches has not only enhanced my technical abilities, but also provided insight into different problem-solving methodologies within the field of civil engineering.”
GMC’s Environmental interns were hard at work both in the office and out in the field this summer. Hannah Grissett worked with our Montgomery office and was able to watch a project progress from start to finish.
“It feels extremely rewarding to finish a project. Whether it be a delineation, taking cross-sections or writing up a report,” Hannah said. “Doing them alongside some of the smartest and kindest people I’ve met is great!”
Some of GMC’s teams hold department retreats during the year to develop strategic plans, celebrate accomplishments, bond with coworkers and discuss industry topics. Atlanta Architecture intern Mary Beth Caldwell had the opportunity to join in on the Georgia Architecture team’s retreat this summer.
“My favorite thing I’ve done so far was being able to attend the mid-year retreat,” she said. It truly was such a fun time, especially as an intern to get to know and hang out with coworkers outside the office.”
GMC doesn’t just hire interns within our disciplines, but also within our corporate services teams. This summer we had interns across marketing, accounting and communications, giving them an inside look at how their majors can be applied in the architecture and engineering industry.
“All my coworkers and bosses have been so patient and eager to explain any questions I have, which has helped me learn so much about the inner works of what the accounting department does for GMC,” Montgomery Accounting Intern Isabelle Price said.
Corporate service interns get to work on a multitude of tasks such as designing marketing collateral, writing news articles, creating social media posts and learning how to work in a corporate setting.
“I have had a lot of fun projects, however, designing the Birmingham Corporate Challenge t-shirts was my favorite,” Birmingham Marketing intern, Laryssa Molina Becerra. (Fun fact: Laryssa’s t-shirt design won first place in GMC’s division!)
The GMC team is sad to see our interns go, but we know we are sending them back to school with real world experiences they can apply to their curriculum, and we hope to see them back here soon!
