GMC team travels to Guatemala to help provide clean water to local community

In April 2021, several of GMC’s team members took our “building communities” mission international. The group traveled to Guatemala with Asociación Pozos Agua Viva, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing safe drinking water to remote areas in Guatemala.

Their goal for this trip was to drill a water well in the remote indigenous Mayan village of Mam Cajolá. The village, which was established three years ago, is home to approximately 265 families with a total population of almost 800. They had no electricity, and their only source of water was hand-dug, shallow wells that were easily contaminated.

GMC engineers spent the week working on the drilling project, while other team members taught health and hygiene lessons to the women and children in the village as part of the mission to improve the lifestyle and health of the community.

At the end of the week, the group dedicated the well and celebrated with the people in the community, playing in the water and even creating their first-ever slip ‘n’ slide.
