Wheeler Crook named Civil + Structural Engineer 2020 Rising Star

We are thrilled to announce GMC Vice President of Engineering Wheeler Crook has been selected as one of Civil + Structural Engineer’s 2020 Rising Stars in Multidiscipline Engineering!

Rising Star award winners are selected based on their record of demonstrated exceptional ability and professional accomplishments related to the AEC Industry in one or more of the following capacities: management; leadership; teaching; research; and/or public service. These individuals represent the future role models and leaders who will shape their firms and professions, leading to a more sustainable AEC industry.

As noted in his nomination, Wheeler possesses a unique set of engineering and interpersonal skills that allowed him to be placed in GMC’s Water Resources & Treatment Division within 3 years of joining the firm. His ability to design and manage engineering and construction of large-scale infrastructure projects alongside individuals with decades of experience has been a contributing factor in furthering his career in the engineering field.  Currently, Wheeler serves as Vice President of Engineering, managing business development efforts, project managers, and the design of all civil and municipal projects across central and south Alabama, in addition to special projects throughout the Southeast. He has been a crucial part of the firm’s success, bringing an energy and drive that is truly unmatched.

He received the Water Environment Federation (WEF) Arthur Sidney Bedell Award in 2017 from the Alabama Water Environment Association (AWEA) and was recognized as the American Water Works Association Young Professional of the Year for the Alabama-Mississippi Region in 2012. He has been published in national publications, such as The Military Engineer, and has presented at numerous technical conferences, sharing his expertise on topics ranging from cost-effective alternatives for municipal wastewater, virtual design and construction and reducing taste and odor issues in drinking water, among others.

Wheeler serves on the Alabama Water Environment Association Board of Directors as WEF Delegate, and is a member of the Water Environment Federation. In addition, he served as the co-chair for the first ever Alabama/Mississippi Joint Annual Conference in 2019, bringing together AWEA, the AL/MS Section of the American Water Works Association and the Mississippi Water Environment Association.

He is a graduate of Leadership Montgomery, and has served as a loaned executive for the River Region United Way and on the young professionals’ board for Unbridled nonprofit organization. Currently he serves on the United Way Impact Council and the Children’s Hospital 2019 Committee for the Future.
