City of Snellville cuts ribbon on new park

Community members and residents from the surrounding area joined city and project officials for the Oak Road Park ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, July 22 in Snellville, Georgia.

GMC designed and managed construction of the new park, which spans 4.67 acres between Scenic Highway and Mountain View Road. The parcel of land is heavily-wooded on the back side, with an active stream along the rear property line, and features a pavilion, community green, .25-mile walking trail with a pedestrian bridge and a playground.

The land for Oak Road Park was purchased in 2003 with Governor’s Greenspace Funds. The program was created by former Gov. Roy Barnes through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and allowed cities and counties to apply for funding to preserve green space. Snellville Parks and Recreation received funding to purchase the property to develop a passive neighborhood park. By definition, passive parks have no paved parking or organized activities, have limited lighting and entail minimal development to keep the property as natural as possible.

GMC’s design plans for the park were accepted by the City in August 2016. Construction was awarded to Zaveri Enterprises, Inc., in November, with work beginning shortly after in February 2017.

Key players in development of the project include Oak Road Park Neighbors, City of Snellville Mayor and City Council, Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, Snellville Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Snellville Planning Department.
