GMC receives prestigious environmental stewardship award

GMC was named a recipient of the 2014 Partners for Environmental Progress (PEP) Member Environmental Stewardship Awards at the annual membership meeting on April 15, 2014 at 5 Rivers Delta Center in Mobile, Ala. Since 2005, the PEP Board of Directors has awarded Environmental Stewardship Awards to members whose work has demonstrated innovative environmental best practices and who have made a significant contribution to the Mobile/Baldwin region’s triple bottom line—economically, environmentally and socially.

GMC received the award for their break-through environmental remediation plan implemented to clean up the contaminated AIDT Maritime Training Center site. Their innovative solution included phytoremediation (the utilization of plants to clean up environmental contaminants) with a Bald Cypress forest and fern plots, making it the first of its kind in the state of Alabama. By combating the environmental issues stemming from the contaminated site, the team was able to not only keep the project development on track, but also to restore the natural habitat in a way that will continue to improve the site’s environmental conditions even more as time progresses.

Regional Vice President and Environmental Department Head Lee Walters, along with Environmental Manager Jymalyn Redmond, accepted the award on GMC’s behalf. Other recipients of this year’s award are Dunn Building Company, Hargrove Engineers + Constructors and Thompson Engineering.
